Squinter, a regular columnist in the Andersonstown News, provoked, with an article of his, what some are describing as a ‘family feud’ within republican circles last week.
The article pointed to the growing levels of petty (and not so petty) crime in the West Belfast (and particularly the Lower Falls area), and attacked Gerry Adams for not doing more about it. Fairly standard stuff for an opinion piece you would think.
The article followed on the news that another well known person in the community had been killed by ‘anti-social’ elements. Bab McGreevy, an amateur bodybuilder was kicked to death outside his own home last week. This is just the latest seemingly random murder in the area – the most high profile being Harry Holland, a popular shopkeeper stabbed to death as he confronted a group robbing his van.
What made this killing different was that Bab had been at one point an IRA prisoner and the Republican circles see this as just another sign that West Belfast has been surrendered to the ‘hoods’.
